I have many happy memories from my days as a sound engineer with the BBC; from the pressure of live news and sport, to rattling tea-cups and operating ‘grams’ for radio drama, to recording pop music and symphony orchestras and continuity announcing and news reading in between.

Back in those days, there was 2 years of audio training – residential training at the BBC’s facility in Worcestershire interspersed with on the job training. It was a great experience and invaluable knowledge I still use today in my home studio.

Although my BBC training was in the analogue world, the principles of capturing sound in the best quality and with minimal noise are still as pertinent today – a great quality mic in the right isolated acoustic environment and applying the right mic technique are essentials.

Of course, signal processing is all in the digital domain today – with ProTools and other DAWs offering a massively more advanced set of tools for a lot less cost than the days of huge mixing consoles with outboard signal processing, tape and razor blades! The principles are the same – despite being software based – the revelation is how advanced the tools are today – there was no ‘mouth de-click’ when I first trained!

Today I have a fully kitted out, professional home studio, from which I can record, edit, polish, mix, master and deliver. Or you can connect remotely to my booth to produce and record ‘down the line’.
